The Ministry of sports of the Government of India on Saturday affirmed that Wimbledon Doubles winner Sania Mirza has been recommended for the “Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna” honor.
The Secretary of Sports Ajit Sharan said, “We had got a late recommendation from All India Tennis Association (AITA) but the Minister accepted that and recommended the same to the Awards Committee.”
“However, the final decision to give the honour rests with the Awards Committee,” he added.
The 28 year old Sania received her FIRST Women’s doubles Grand Slam title along with Switzerland partner Martina Hingis in June.
Sinia also grew to become World No. 1 before winning the Grasscourt major.
Sinia was honored by Arjuna award in 2004 while a couple of years after she was honored India’s fourth highest civilian honour Padma Shri.
