China is all set to host 2023 Asian Cup Football tournament. South Korea have abandoned their bid to stage the tournament, leaving the sole other bidders China with a free run to become hosts.
Why South Korea Abandoned their bid?
According to the Korea Football Association (KFA), it had pulled out to strategically focus on a joint bid with North Korea to host the Women’s World cup in the same year.
In March 2019, the Korea Football Association had announced the joint bid, however diplomatic connections between Pyongyang and Seoul have since diminished with North Korea-United States nuclear talks deadlocked.
The AFC Competitions Committee confirmed on 12 April 2016 that 4 nations expressed interest in hosting the 2023 AFC Asian Cup: China, Indonesia, South Korea and Thailand.
Following withdrawals, only China is in contention to win the hosting rights.
