What is the best way to move an ~14,000-lb (~6,350-kg) telescope? Webb rides in style inside a specially designed shipping container called the Space Telescope Transporter for Air, Road and Sea (STTARS).
Throughout the construction and Assembly of Webb, the telescope has moved between NASA centers and partner locations. The huge container it uses, which dwarfs Webb in terms of mass with its ~165,000-lb (~75,000-kg) bulk, protects the telescope during its journeys on ground, above ground, and over water. Webb’s combined optical element and science instruments will be carefully packed inside STTARS for their upcoming trip from NASA’s Johnson Space Center to Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems in California.
