We mourn the passing of astronaut John Young. After hearing President Kennedy’s bold proposal in 1961 to land a man on the Moon and return him safely to Earth, Young said knew what he had to do. He began his 42-year career with us in 1962, when he was selected from among hundreds of young pilots to join our second astronaut class. Spanning three generations of spaceflight, he went on to fly in space six times during his time as an astronaut. He was also a naval aviator, test pilot and aeronautical engineer.
