Today marks the 60th anniversary of the launch of Sputnik, ushering in the Space Age. On this day (#OTD) October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched the First Ever artificial satellite into orbit. They named it Sputnik, which means “fellow traveler” in Russian.
Sputnik could be seen orbiting in the night sky, with its distinct beeping telemetry broadcast around the world. NASA was formed within a year of the Soviet satellite’s launch.
