According to a study, online social media and social networking service company Facebook has beaten another online news and social networking service company Twitter in fighting fake news.
A new study from Stanford University and New York University analysed 570 fake news websites between January 2015 and July 2018.
The study was found that on Facebook, the fake-news engagement condensed from around 200 million to 70 million a month, while on Twitter, it has been in the 4-6 million per month range since 2016.
The study was called “Trends in the Diffusion of Misinformation on Social media.”
As of 2016, Twitter had more than 319 million monthly active users. On the day of the 2016 U.S. Presidential election, Twitter proved to be the largest source of breaking news, with 40 million election-related tweets sent by 10 p.m. (Eastern Time) that day.
Facebook on the other hand has more than 2.2 billion monthly active users as of January 2018.
Its popularity has led to prominent media coverage for the company, including significant scrutiny over privacy and the psychological effects it has on users.
In recent years, Facebook has faced intense pressure over the amount of fake news, hate speech and depictions of violence prevalent on its services, all of which it is attempting to counteract.
