As per a recent survey conducted by the Health Ministry, India has the second highest female smokers in the World only behind United States.
Cigarette consumption stood at 93.2 billion sticks in India in 2014-15. Compared to the usage in previous years, there is a sharp decline observed in overall consumption. However, an upward trend is witnessed in the case of women smokers, making Indian women eclipse to second place in the world of women smokers, only behind United States.
Experts say that this rise in women smokers is a big concern as it is leading to the rise in cases of infertility and increasing the chances of cancer among Indian women.
Anti-Tobacco Activists demand Government to levy huge taxes on every type of tobacco product to bring down the consumption further.
