Raja Rajeswari, an Indian born women has been sworn-in as a criminal court judge in New York City, becoming the first India-born women to be selected a judge in New York City.
Chennai-born Ms. Rajeswari (43), who had migrated to the US as a teenager, previously worked with the Richmond County District Attorney’s Office for her entire career in several bureaus.
Rajeswari, along with 27 other judges took the oath of office at a ceremony in New York City on Monday.
The mayor appoints judges to 10-year terms in the Criminal Court and the Family Court within the city of New York.
According to the statement of the mayor, Ms. Rajeswari has an “extraordinary empathy for others”.
“For somebody like me, an immigrant who comes from India, I’m beyond greatful,” Rajeswari had said.
Rajeswari also said that she would like to utilize her new position to enhance the judicial framework by encouraging interpreters to have more access to aid immigrants.
