Launched on this day in 2001, 22 October, ESA’s first ‘small satellite with a big heart’, Proba-1. The Project for On-Board Autonomy (Proba) missions are technology demonstrators that are now finding many different uses. From about 600 km high, Proba-1 captured this image of a heart-shaped island in the Pacific Ocean on 18 June 2008. More info at http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Observing_the_Earth/Proba-1.
