Here’s What You Need to Know about EU Emergency Call over Egg Scandal
The European Union will call an emergency gathering of ministers over insecticide-tainted eggs in a bid to stop blaming and shaming over the scandal spreading across Europe.
The European Commissioner for Health and food Safety Mr. Vytenis Andriukaitis, states that he wanted the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany to stop exchanging accusations about who is answerable for the panic, which involves fipronil, a chemical that can be harmful to humans.
France in the meantime said polluted eggs were first sold there in April, approximately four months before the threat became public, as the crisis that has hit at least 11 European countries widened further.
Andriukaitis said that there is a need to work together to draw the necessary lessons and move forward instead of losing energy on finger pointing.
Belgium earlier this week accused the Netherlands of knowing about the fipronil eggs since November 2016 and failing to notify other countries, a charge the Dutch have denied.
