Former Chief Election Commissioner T.N. Seshan, who led electoral reforms in the country in the 1990s, passed away on 10th November following a cardiac arrest. He was 86.

Seshan was the 10th Chief Election Commissioner of India (1990–96), who reformed elections by mostly ending its malpractices in the country.

Seshan redefined the status and visibility of the Election Commission of India. He won the Ramon Magsaysay Award for government service in 1996.

As the 10th Chief Election Commissioner of India, Seshan’s name became identical with transparency and efficiency when he managed to stamp his authority on the country’s electoral system by conducting the cleanest elections in living memory.

In 1996, Tim McGirk wrote in the Independent newspaper, Seshan made Indian elections fairer and had terrorised politicians and bureaucrats into behaving slightly better. Nobody dared to violate the law.
