Heavy rains hit the Tamil Nadu capital city, Chennai in the worst possible way. As per the statistics, the present rainfall is the highest observed in the past 100 years.
So far, the total rainfall in Chennai in the past couple of days was observed to be 119.73 cm breaking the 108.8 cm rainfall recorded in 1918. The death toll in rain affected areas is close to 200.
The Indian Army has been called in for rescue operations. The Tamil Nadu state government has started releasing 20,000 cubic feet/second water from Chembarambakkam reservoir, the highest outflow in the past several years.
Normal life came to a standstill in Chennai city as road, rail and Air Transport stalled. Schools, government and private institutions have been closed for days. People are suffering as the necessary commodities are not available.
Heavy to very heavy rains were predicted for coming 4 days. Chief Minister Jayalalitha has reviewed the situation and instructed ministers to inspect the affected areas and organize the best possible rescue operations.
