With this growth and the highest return-on-investment (ROI) , the Bitcoin which was trading at more than $8,700 on 17th January emerged as the best-performing asset of the decade.
Bitcoin was invented in 2008 by an unknown person using the name Satoshi Nakamoto and started in 2009 when its source code was released as open-source software.
Satoshi Nakamoto stated in his white paper that: “The root problem with conventional currencies is all the trust that’s required to make it work. The central bank must be trusted not to debase the currency, but the history of fiat currencies is full of breaches of that trust.”
Bitcoin’s price reached a record high of $19,783 per bitcoin in 2017.
Throughout the first half of 2018, the price of Bitcoin fluctuated between $11,480 and $5,848.
On 1 July 2018, bitcoin’s price was $6,343.
The price on January 1, 2019 was $3,747, down 72% for 2018 and down 81% since the all-time high.
In September 2019 the Intercontinental Exchange (the owner of the NYSE) began trading of bitcoin futures on its exchange called Bakkt.
In December 2019 YouTube removed bitcoin and Cryptocurrency videos, but later restored the content and they said they “made the wrong call.”
The price of bitcoins has gone through cycles of appreciation and depreciation referred to by some as bubbles and busts.
