Do you know your red sprites from your blue jets? ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen captured unique evidence of these strange lights above thunderstorms – more properly
known as transient luminous events – during his time on board the International Space Station. A new instrument to be launched next year will continue the research. Find out more here: http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Human_Spaceflight/Research/Atmosphere_Space_Interactions_Monitor/
Transient Luminous Events (TLEs) are flashes and glows that appear above storms and are results of activity occurring in and below those storms. Researchers are working to better understand lightning and thunderstorms, how they form and develop over time, and why storms produce different TLEs in different circumstances.
