The Government of India on Wednesday approved the official amendments on Corruption.
According to the decision of Union cabinet, the minimum punishing period for taking or giving bribes enhanced from six months to three years and the maximum punishment enhanced from five years to seven years.
The cabinet issued its approval to amend the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 at a meeting
led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
As understood the intentions of the amendment, the proposed changes would fill in perceived gaps in the domestic Anti-corruption law and also help in meeting the nation’s commitments under the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) more effectively.
The proposed changes are primarily aimed at setting down more stringent measures to handle corruption.
