During last week’s historic first dive through the gap between Saturn and its rings, an instrument on the Cassini spacecraft collected data about dust that it encountered along the way. This is a visual and Audio representation of that data – and it’s much quieter than expected. Cassini mission engineers are delighted, because less dust means that they won’t have to use the spacecraft’s antenna as a shield during most of the remaining orbits, while ring scientists are puzzled that this region turned out to be “the big empty.” Learn more about what these findings might mean for the mission:
