Ongoing economic and social challenges are testing the internal cohesion of the European Union while the Eastern half of the region continues to struggle with low oil prices and other falling commodity values. GDP growth in the region is expected to modestly accelerate in 2016 but even with these gains, the region faces many hurdles on its path toward economic recovery which, collectively, are leading to perceptions of increasing polarization and populism across ECA.
