First Human Milk Bank Set Up

Fortis healthcare has launched the first pasteurized human milk bank named “Amaara” in New Delhi.

The milk bank is collaboration between Fortis La Femme, a specialized hospital for women and newborns and Breast Milk Foundation (BMF), a non-profit organization. The Amaara Milk Bank at Fortis La Femme is Delhi’s first Milk Bank set up with the aim of providing pasteurized human milk to infants admitted in ICUs.

The initiative is aimed at curbing infant mortality rate by making available pre-term babies the best food for survival. Providing human breast milk to the fragile infants can save their lives. Keeping in mind the physiological inability of mothers in many cases to breastfeed, this human milk bank assume great importance.

At the ‘Amaara’ Milk Bank, the donated milk will be tested, pasteurized and frozen to make it available to the needy infants.
