Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has been asked to pay $72 million compensation to the family of a woman who claimed her death was due to the use of the company’s Baby Powder talcum.
The woman identified as Jackie Fox from Birmingham, Alabama, aged 62, died of ovarian cancer in 2015, having used the talcum for decades. Her family argued that the company knew of talcum risks but did not warn customers.
J&J denied the claim and the firm is considering an appeal. A company spokeswoman said, “We have no higher responsibility than the health and safety of consumers, and we are disappointed with the outcome of the trial. We sympathize with the plaintiff’s family but firmly believe the safety of cosmetic talc is supported by decades of scientific evidence.”
Over than 1,000 similar cases are pending across the nation and lawyers opined many more could be filed after this verdict.
