Russian Sergei Chernyshev and Japanese Ramu Kawai earned the FIRST-ever breakdancing gold medals in the male and female categories respectively at the Youth Olympics.
18-year-old Russian Sergei Chernyshev and 17-year-old Japanese Ramu Kawai earned the first-ever breakdancing gold medals in the male and female categories respectively at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In the final set, the Russian teen beaten French rival ‘Martin’ by a score of 4-0, to win the introductory championship in a breakdancing category which is making its debut at the 2018 Youth Olympic games.
Chernyshev beaten the Japan’s Shigekix in the semi-final round to reach the conclusive phase of the game.
Chernyshev, also called ‘Bumblebee’ (nickname), said after his victory, “the most important battle was against the Japanese rival. I have never beaten the Japanese break-dancer before, this is my first victory.”
He further said, “I felt the power to win today and the thing that I represent Russia gave me extra energy.”
The 2018 Summer Youth Olympics has freshly introduced breakdancing as part of its programme. Breakdancing is eligible for inclusion as it is a discipline of dancesport, which is recognised by the International Olympic Committee.
The competition features men’s, women’s and mixed-team events in a one-on-one battle format.
